read a long time ago, from a diary, from the civil war, they put holes in some of there coins so they could sew them inside of a pocket,so they wouldnt lose them, money was scarce and they didn`t want to lose them if they fell down,or hapend to come out of their pockets.while sleeping on the ground

Nice find! Could have also been lost in 1881. A hundred years after minting. The culture in America has changed to not recognize real money nowadays. Back then even a baby knew that silver and gold were real money. Merry Christmas!

Great job on the find and the video. It's obvious you put a lot of time and work into your videos and it shows. From one YouTuber to another, it is appreciated. Keep up the good work.

Hey y'all. My mom is from Watauga Co. and I am not so far from there now. My grand dad used to dream and detect in the late 60s early 70s; he would delight in your finds.
    Keep up the good work.

What a great find. I've been metal detecting for about four years now, had to give it due to exposure to agent orange. So I know just how it feels to get a really great find. The oldest coin I have ever found was a Chinese coin 1760. I am no longer able to metal detect, but is was great while it lasted.

  28. 925inder - January 2, 2018 6:24 pm

Great find, congrats! It was probably dropped much later than 1700s.

The wing reminds me of the top of an old radiator cap. The ones that had the the guage in the middle

That's the find of lifetime for sure! My family has history in that area just south and west from Mars Hill. We eventually moved a few miles west into Tennessee, but for most of the 19th century, my family lived in that area. I think the area was a little more populated than you may realize. In fact, Buncombe County was founded in 1791. By 1850, the area had many farms.
As to the real, it is an absolute great find. It is not that far fetched that it was found there. Reales were still considered legal tender in the US until 1857. I would theorize that someone received this in payment and decided to make a necklace out of it because of its rarity. It could have been a Cherokee or an early settler. Also, it is not out of the realm of possibility that the real is counterfeit. Counterfeiting has always been a problem even in colonial America. Congratulations again!
